American Woodworkers $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Daniel Pabst, Gustav Stickley, James Krenov, Thomas J. Duffy, Sam Maloof, Norm Abram, Herter Brothers, Roy Underhill, George Nakashima, Wharton Esherick, Charles-Honoré Lannuier, Charles Radtke, Joe Seliga, Joe Bryere, Jere Osgood, Tage Frid, David J. Marks, Henry O. Studley, Evert Sodergren, R. Bruce Hoadley, Nimura and Sato, Stewart Wurtz, Fish Carving, Garry Knox Bennett, Alexander Roux, Ellen Mccaleb, Darrell Peart. Excerpt: A virtuoso cabinetmaker of the Victorian Era, Daniel Pabst (1826-1910) created some of the most extraordinary hand-carved furniture in America. Sometimes working in collaboration with architect Frank Furness (1839-1912), Pabst crafted pieces in the Neo-Grec, Renaissance Revival, Modern Gothic, and Colonial Revival styles. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in Great Britain. Born in Langenstein, Germany, Pabst immigrated to the U.S. in 1849 and settled in Philadelphia, where he would spend his professional career. The excellence of his craftsmanship elevated him above his peers, as did the strongly architectonic (building-like) quality of his furniture designsoften massively scaled, with columns, pilasters, rounded and Gothic arches, bold carving and polychromatic decoration. He was a master at cameo-carving (intaglio) in wood: veneering a light-colored wood over a darker, then carving through to create a vivid contrast. Some pieces were adorned with decorative tiles, others with painted glass panels backed with reflective foil. Elaborate strap hinges and hardware were commonly used, and the furniture was sometimes ebonized. His Philadelphia shop grew to employ up to 50 workmen… More: |

Looking at Lovemaking: Constructions of Sexuality in Roman Art, 100 B.C.-A.D. 250 $23.97 What did sex mean to the ancient Romans? In this lavishly illustrated study, John R. Clarke investigates a rich assortment of Roman erotic art to answer this question-and along the way, he reveals a society quite different from our own. Clarke reevaluates our understanding of Roman art and society in a study informed by recent gender and cultural studies, and focusing for the first time on attitudes toward the erotic among both the Roman non-elite and women. This splendid volume is the first study of erotic art and sexuality to set these works-many newly discovered and previously unpublished-in their ancient context and the first to define the differences between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. Roman artists pictured a great range of human sexual activities-far beyond those mentioned in classical literature-including sex between men and women, men and men, women and women, men and boys, threesomes, foursomes, and more. Roman citizens paid artists to decorate expensive objects, such as silver and cameo glass, with scenes of lovemaking. Erotic works were created for and sold to a broad range of consumers, from the elite to the very poor, during a period spanning the first century B.C. through the mid-third century of our era. This erotic art was not hidden away, but was displayed proudly in homes as signs of wealth and luxury. In public spaces, artists often depicted outrageous sexual acrobatics to make people laugh. Looking at Lovemaking depicts a sophisticated, pre-Christian society that placed a high value on sexual pleasure and the art that represented it. Clarke shows how this culture evolved within religious, social, and legalframeworks that were vastly different from our own and contributes an original and controversial chapter to the history of human sexuality. |

Open Salt Compendium $79.95 This stunning book is a must-have for all collectors of open salt cellars, featuring in-depth coverage of examples made with American and English art glass, English and French cameo glass, clear and colored pressed glass, figural French faence, Russian enamels, porcelain, figural silver, and more. There are 941 full color plates showcasing over 3,500 open salts, many previously undocumented. These beautiful pieces were used before salt was processed to flow freely from a shaker. They sometimes held a block of salt which was chopped at with knives; other times they were used with diminutive salt spoons. The open salt became such an important part of fine dining that it remained in use even after the successful adaptation of salt to shakers. The wonderful assortment shown here ranges from eighteenth century Chinese export porcelain to examples made in the 1990s. The authors provide examples in all price ranges and media–some even made from shell, bone, and wood. Steuben, Tiffany, Pairpoint, Moser, Royal Bayreuth, Noritake, Daum Nancy, Meissen, Wedgwood, and Royal Doulton are just a few of the manufacturers represented. Captions provide dimensions, approximate dates of production, marks, values and various production techniques. Each salt is also classified by rarity. This is a comprehensive reference you’ll turn to again and again! |

Roman Cameo Glass in the British Museum $60 Cameo glass represents the ultimate achievement in Roman luxury glass, and the British Museum has the world’s largest and finest collection. This comprises over seventy pieces, including two of only a dozen surviving complete cameo glass vessels: the celebrated Portland Vase, the greatest surviving example of Roman cameo glass, and the Auldjo Jug, each with its complex and intriguing history. The catalogue, begun by Veronica Tatton-Brown and William Gudenrath of the Corning Museum of Glass, has been revisited and enhanced by Paul Roberts of the British Museum and David Whitehouse and William Gudenrath of the Corning Museum of Glass. This publication presents the collection in its entirety for the first time. Each piece is illustrated in colour and line drawing, with full description and discussion. The book also presents the results of ground-breaking new research. The authors construct a comprehensive context, using archaeological, technological, iconographic and typological evidence to look at the origins of cameo glass and its place in contemporary Roman art and craftsmanship. They also propose a relative and absolute chronology for cameo glass, and suggest possible models for the organisation of the workshop(s) that produced it. |
